R3GIS is expanding its research and development efforts by exploring how modern smartphones equipped with LiDAR can support accurate, science-based urban tree care. This work has already led to the creation of the Tree Measurement App, the alpha version of the demo enables the quick and accurate diameter measurement (DBH) of trees directly in the field. This measurement is integrated and stored within the GreenSpaces platform, eliminating the need for a manual input.

Building on this foundation, additional capabilities are in the roadmap. Our goal is to extend mobile LiDAR to capture more structural attributes, improve measurement precision, and support advanced use cases connected to digital twins, tree equity and risk-aware planning. The Tree Measurement App is only the first step; the broader vision is a suite of mobile tools that bring powerful, field-ready data acquisition directly into the hands of practitioners.
